Overview: Due to the pandemic the means of recreation and travel for Americans have transitioned from cruise liners and commercial airplanes to recreational vehicles (RVs) such as camper vans, travel trailers/fifth wheels, toy haulers and motorhomes. This mode of recreation and travel allows Americans to stay within the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines while enjoying traveling and the outdoors. With the increased popularity of RVs due to the pandemic the United States will see an increase in accidents. There are many options and resources the RV community can use to increase skills and knowledge of safely traveling with their RVs to diminish accidents.

According to fifthwheelst.com (2020), 75,000 injuries due to RV accidents occurred in 2012. In 2021, RV shipments from manufacturers are forecasted to increase from 423,628 to 502,582 units, which is an increase of 18.7% from 2020 (RVIA, 2020). According to RV Travel, RV sales are projected to increase 19.5% by the end of 2021 (Woodbury, 2020). In another report conducted by foxbusiness.com, millennial RV booking grew 70% from 2019 to 2020 (Park, 2021). Furthermore, forbes.com reported millennials are the generation to have the highest proportion of moving violation or at-fault accidents on their records at 27.31%, (Gorzelany, 2020). Additionally, according to rvingknowhow.com most states (34) only require a standard driver license or permit to operate an RV (Richardson, 2020). Finally, 25.4% of RV operators are 55 years of age and older, which is over a quarter of the RV operators on the road in the United States. So, what we have here is the last reported RV accidents from 2012, an increase of RV manufacturing and sales, and of booking of RVs by statistically the worst drivers on the road, most states only required a standard driver license or permit to operate an RV, and the largest population of RV operators are senior citizens. If RV community do not act to ensure their operators seek to obtain the skills and knowledge to safely operate an RV, accidents will increase. This report will dive into this existing dilemma and preferred conclusion.
